TAUFALE

photos ex Harold Kidd (& trademe + Paper Past)

Recent chat here around a mystery launch moored in the Whau creek & the design / builds of Onehunga based, Les Coulthard has unearthed several of his 27′>30′ v-bottomed cruiser launches from the late 1930’s. CYA member Nathan Herbert is currently restoring Lucinda (search ww for a post on her) & her sister ship Taufale, that is currently for sale on trademe.
Interestingly Taufale has had 3 different cabin tops, the photos above show her as launched with a bridge deck type cabin, a single profile aft swooping version and the current single flat cabin top.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion when it comes to which of the three versions you prefer – but as is most often the case, the ‘as launched’ wins hands down & gets my tick.

Note: you can freeze the slide show above by clicking on a photo + the smaller images below can be enlarged also by clicking on them.

  2. Hi guys my name is Damian Church and I have purchased Taufale on the 6th of March 2020 and have removed the name traveler and replaced it with her original name “Taufale” on the 8th of March the previous owner and I took her to a mooring in Coromandel not far from Hanafords wharf where she will be based. She will be tidied up and used as a live abord as I start work in Coromandle in one week and had a hard time finding a rental in town. I need to replace a couple of ribs if anyone knows where I can source the timber than let me know. damianchurch16@gmail.com

  3. Love the style as- launched! But I’m a bit of a hard chine Coulthard fanboy now. Bloody impractical aft cabin by the looks on such a small boat. Mind you, the bridge looks nice and open.

  4. I’ve got Clive Menzies 1946-1950 (when he bought MENAI) S.G. Lawler of the De Luxe Theatre, Mt. Eden 1950, A M Pawson c1960, A M Smith of Ngapuhi Rd 1973, Graeme Hughes, Northcote 1993 and Ivan Raos 2010. The last two owners thought she was built by Chas. Bailey Jr in 1939.

  5. Re her ownership in the 60s: I think Barnards owned her and then moved on to Crusader (or VV) and then Hautonga late ’60s -large hard chine launch that is now off Scotts Landing

  6. I am increasingly impressed with the power of WW. Finding the Coulthard provenance of this lovely launch through the joint efforts of several of WW’s contributors has been a great pleasure. All we need to cap that off is details of her name and ownership during the period from her launch in 1933 to 1946 when Clive Menzies owned her.
